Programs

Scrivener
Scrivener is a fabulous tool for aspiring and established writers. Personally, it has enabled me to change my style from a 'pantser' to a 'plotter', thereby increasing my productivity immensely. Some of my favorite features that I regularly use are:
  • ​Corkboard - Plot chapters out in rough
  • Formating presets - My wife's favourite as she does all my editing and formatting for pbulication
  • Autosaving - This has been a great feature as I write on multiple devices and save to the cloud.
  • Compile - From writing to ebook is so easy with this feaure

Grammarly is both a free or paid tool that we have been using to assist in our first round of editing. It checks spelling, grammar, and punctuation, which after looking at word 75,604, you need some assistance! Here are a few of our favorite features:
  • Ability to change the type of document you are reviewing - from academic to essay
  • Set the language you write in, including different kinds of English, but you will still need a country specific dictionary
  • Integrates into MS Word

It can do much more than this.

Joanna Penn's website, The Creative Penn, is a great resource for self-publishing authors. I found it early in my search, and have learned so much from her site! Additionally, she has lead me to other useful sites that I will share in the future as well. Some of my favourite resources on her site are:
  • Her Podcast - she has over 300 episodes
  • She is an award winning author, as well as New York Times and USA Today bestseller, so she can back up her resources with success
  • She shares quite a lot of information freely.
